National Pollinator Month: While National Pollinator Week is specifically June 16-22, the National Wildlife Federation and others encourage celebrating pollinators throughout the entire month of June. This year’s theme for Pollinator Week is “Pollinator Cultural Connections,” according to the Land Trust Alliance and is also featured on the Pollinator.org website.
Mosquito Bucket Challenge: In light of Pollinator month, try this fun (and surprisingly effective) challenge. It’s called the Mosquito Bucket Challenge, and it’s a simple, pollinator-safe way to keep mosquitoes in check without resorting to harmful fogging.
Garden Center 2025 College Scholarships:
Garden Center Board members Jean Azar and Marsha Goan attended Senior Honors Night at both North and South High Schools in May. On behalf of the Garden Center, they presented a $1,500 college scholarship to Madison Hays from
North High who will be attending the University of Michigan. And a $1,500 college scholarship was presented to Brigid Williams from South High who will attend Michigan State University. A third $1,500 college scholarship was presented to Kingsley Donaldson at the Garden Center’s May Board meeting. She will be attending Boston College. Congratulations to all three 2025 scholarship recipients.
2025 Garden Center’s Diamond Anniversary: The Grosse Pointe Garden Center was formed as an organization 75 years ago in 1950. It started out as the Garden and Grounds Committee, to oversee the maintenance of the Alger gardens, for the nascent War Memorial organization formed in September 1949. The committee broke off to become a separate, independent organization in 1950 under existing Chair Vincent DePetris. Representatives from 9 local garden clubs made up the original Garden Center Committee: Garden Club of Michigan, Little Garden Club, GPF&G, Junior League Gardeners, Grosse Pointe Garden Club, Ibex, Grosse Pointe Park Garden Club, The Pointe Garden Club, and Grosse Pointe Woods Garden Club. Each club also donated funds to help finance the newly formed Garden Center. Click here to read the full history.
33rd Annual Garden Tour: The Garden Center’s ever-popular Annual Garden Tour will be held on Friday & Saturday, June 20 & 21, 2025. The features 7 lovely private gardens, a tour raffle, Garden Shoppe, scavenger hunt, Sweet Mountain Strings Dulcimers, St. Clair Trio, Festival of Flutes, Master Gardener information table, artists painting garden scenes, garden docents, complimentary refreshments, and more. Explore the Gardens of Great Dixter: Mil Hurley, was very fortunate to have taken a gardening class at the famed gardens at the Great Dixter estate, former home of well-known garden writer, Christopher Lloyd. She shared her wonderful experiences and some of the valuable gardening knowledge she came home with. This popular program was held on April 9 in the Reception Room at the War Memorial.
4th Annual Legacy Seminar: Growing for the Whole Table; Flowers and Food was held March 8, 2025 in the Community Room at the War Memorial. Our two featured speakers, Denise Schreiber and Melinda Myers covered topics geared for home gardeners and incorporating fruits and vegetables into your garden landscape and container gardens. Admission included a buffet brunch.
Climate Change and Gardening Perspectives from the U.K. We had a sell-out crowd at our February 25 program with Claire Mitchell who gave an inspiring presentation on the science of climate change and what it means for gardeners. She addressed the changing temperatures and rain patterns she has experienced in Hampshire, England and how she has had to adapt by applying sustainable soil practices and choosing more suitable plants for the changing climate. She offered hints and tips on gardening in a sustainable, climate-friendly way.
2025 Annual Meeting and Luncheon: The Garden Center held it’s Annual Meeting on Friday, January 17 in the Fred M. Alger Center’s Community Room. Our featured speaker, Kelly Konieczki, shared her journey on becoming a “citizen scientist” in her presentation From Covid and Chaos to Hope. Kelly gave a very interesting talk about the amazing hidden life of birds, insects and other creatures lurking and thriving in your backyard and what you can do to attract them. Master Gardener Scholarship: The Garden Center offers scholarships for those taking the MSU Extension Master Gardener course, Foundations of Gardening. The next course starts on February 6, 2025, click here for information. MSUE course registration begins December 4, 2024 and closes January 29, 2025. 4th Holiday Floral Arranging Workshop: We had a sellout crowd for our floral workshop headed by Johnese Thibault. Under her guidance attendees created lovely holiday table centerpieces that can be extended to cover the upcoming holidays. The workshop was held on Monday, November 25.
Bucket List: A Visit to the Chelsea Flower Show: “Our” Southern Gardener, Mil Hurley, gave a sold-out audience a wonderful program on her trip to the famed RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May 2024. The famed show represents the pinnacle of horticultural excellence, offering something for everyone no matter what level of gardener you are. Mil’s presentation was on Wednesday, November 13.
Garden Club of Michigan Community Award: On June 5, 2024, the Garden Club of Michigan presented its Community Award to the Grosse Pointe Garden Center, accepting on the Garden Center’s behalf was Co-President Candy Sweeny. This award is given in recognition for dedicated efforts which enhance the local environment and improve the community in an impactful way. We thank the Garden Club of Michigan for recognizing the work and educational programs the Garden Center provides for our community as part of our mission. The Garden Center Board of Directors is very appreciative to receive this award.
