A double lecture series, “Planting Like Nature,” for more ecological and sustainable landscapes.

Naturalistic Planting Design

Lecture One (10:00 a.m.): “Open Source….Origins of the New Perennialist Movement.”

Tony Spencer, aka The New Perennialist, will take you through the history and development of the naturalistic style of garden design and the major designers active and influencing the movement today. Enjoy a spectacular visual trip to the frontiers of naturalistic planting design. Insights are aplenty for gardeners looking to go wildly beautiful at home.

About Tony Spencer

Tony Spencer

Writer by profession and planting designer by passion, Tony Spencer is the creative force behind The New Perennialist, an award-winning blog exploring the frontiers of naturalistic garden design. Deeply inspired by the work of Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf and others, Tony is a puckish ringleader in social media helping to capture the zeitgeist for a growing international and inter-generational community of plants people. He won a Landscape Design Honor Award in 2020 from the U.S.-based Perennial Plant Association for his Ontario garden.

Future Plants Show Garden

Lecture Two (1:00 p.m.):Future…..Plants and Designs”

Laura Ekasetya delves into the future of the global movement and signature plants of the naturalistic style. For over 25 years Future Plants has served as a collective effort among several companies intended to realize and market new products in the world of plants. The individual companies specialized in breeding, propagating, production, and trade of perennials. Combining and integrating forces allowed Future Plants to serve the market in its own unique way. The introduction of new perennials comes mainly by working closely together with other specialized breeders, but also by its own selective breeding efforts.
