What are the essential elements needed in creating a garden habitat that is both attractive and sustaining to butterflies and other pollinators? Learn about plant selections, native plants, preparation and selection of the most beneficial garden site, and other important tips.
John Blair started on his butterfly gardening venture in 2012 after retiring from his automotive engineering job. After attending a presentation on creating a butterfly garden utilizing native plants his passion was awakened. He expanded his small vegetable garden into a much larger garden with not only native plants but favorite annuals and butterfly nectaring plants. His garden expanded over many years to over 5,000 square feet with 130 species of native plants attracting over 38 butterfly species. He and his wife moved recently to a larger property near Brooklyn, MI with about 9-acres of land that John is using to not only create a butterfly and pollinator habitat but also restoring large tracts of land to its original prairie. John has been featured in Fine Gardening magazine, Michigan Gardener, Detroit Free Press and The Garden Answer on YouTube. He has also authored articles on butterfly gardening for Michigan Gardener magazine. John enjoys giving inspirational talks to help others get started with their own pollinator habitats using native plants, which means so much to him.
